Biographical Details
Steve read Physics and Educational Psychology at the University of Sheffield. He was Regional Director for Computer Based Learning as part of the Microelectronics Education Programme. In 1983 he became Technical Director and Co-founder of System Applied Technology Limited a provider of Computer-Based Training material.
In 1991, Steve obtained an MSc with distinction from Sheffield Hallam University after undertaking research into efficient storage architectures for knowledge bases on PCs. This research work led to the development of the Structured Elicitation Toolkit (SET) in conjunction with the University of Nottingham, which was a predecessor of the PCPACK software.
Having completed SET, Steve co-founded Epistemics with Professor Nigel Shadbolt as a technology-based company to exploit the concepts demonstrated in the SET software as well as other leading-edge knowledge-engineering research.

Technical Background
Epistemics was commissioned by DERA (then DRA) to develop PCPACK v2, a Windows-based comprehensive suite of KA tools. Steve was the principal software architect for this toolset and also did much of the development in conjunction with Clive Emberey of SIG. At this time Steve was both a director of Epistemics and a partner in SIG and the two companies worked closely together. In 1999, Epistemics acquired the business of SIG and the two companies are now run as a single enterprise. Steve has continued to develop Knowledge Engineering tools for Epistemics and has developed several enhanced versions of the PCPACK toolset, a configurable KA toolset (Meta-Pack) for Unilever and recently has helped to develop a multi-user set of KA tools (PCPACK v4) currently in use at Airbus and Rolls-Royce as part of their product development work undertaken using the MOKA methodology.

Technical Expertise
As well as a developer of KA tools, Steve is also expert in their application to KA tasks. Projects undertaken for DERA include "Quantum Query", a situation-assessment knowledge base developed in conjunction with Cambridge Consultants Ltd., and the Situation-Assessment module for the Cognitive Cockpit programme for the Future Offensive Air System.
Steve is experienced in the use of the CommonKADS methodology and has worked on all levels of CommonKADS models. He also has considerable project-management experience and has been responsible for accreditations to ISO standards for software quality control.
